The first Saturday in May. Mint juleps. Fancy bonnets. Celebrity sightings. A garland of roses.
The Kentucky Derby, one of the iconic events on the American sports calendar, was supposed to be run this weekend. But it is one of the countless sports postponements worldwide because of the coronavirus crisis, being forced out of its traditional spot for the first time since World War II.
But while the race has been moved to the first Saturday in September, Kentucky Derby television coverage roars out of the gate anyway this Saturday. And so, too, will horses who will be competing about 580 miles to the southwest, in Hot Springs, Ark.
