INDIANAPOLIS • Cornerback Trumaine Johnson of the Los Angeles Rams was the only additional player given the franchise tag Wednesday, the deadline for such designations in the NFL.
All told, seven players are on the 2017 list of franchise players, down from 2016 when nine players were franchised and one was given the transition player designation.
Besides Johnson, six others were designated as franchise players earlier in the two-week window to do so: Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, Pittsburgh running back Le’Veon Bell, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, Arizona linebacker Chandler Jones, LA Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram and Carolina defensive tackle Kawann Short.
