Forty years ago, Kevin Greene skipped “career day” as a senior at what was then called Granite City South High School.
How come?
“I’m gonna be a pro football player,” the young Greene had told classmate and best friend Bob Firtos. “And there’s nobody in there for pro football.”
At the time, Greene was a 180-pound defensive end whose highest accolade was honorable mention all conference. He’d received a nibble from Arkansas State, but nobody else really recruited him.
But why should that stop him? Greene was always driven, flamboyant, charismatic, and as former Rams president John Shaw told the Post-Dispatch on Monday night, “a little crazy.
