Adam Schefter first reported, Fassel was in the water along Manhattan Beach boogie-boarding late Wednesday afternoon when he noticed a man caught in the riptide struggling and drifting away. The Rams coach swam to the man and with the help of fellow surfer Jim Burton, put him on a surf board until aid from the Manhattan Beach Lifeguards arrived.
The man was then helped to shore where paramedics waited to provide assistance. After receiving treatment, paramedics on the scene determined that the man needed further evaluation and was rushed to the hospital where his condition was deemed stable.
