BenFred: Smart to be skeptical about NFL guidelines

Al Davis, the late Raiders owner who defied the NFL to move his football team to Los Angeles before returning it to Oakland, once called the league’s relocation guidelines “a perception.”

Those hoping the guidelines are both real and adhered to as the latest Los Angeles debate races toward its finish line should remain skeptical.

The St. Louis Rams, the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders have officially filed for relocation. No shocker there. We knew each team would push its chips to the center of the table.

But we were led to believe a team going all-in came with some conditions, according to the NFL’s “Policy and Procedures for Proposed Franchise Relocations” — the document the league keeps telling us to trust.
