If/when the Anthony Davis trade goes through, the Los Angeles Lakers could only have three players officially on their roster: Davis, LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma. That would make for one hell of a frontcourt, but it leaves the backcourt conspicuously empty.
As LeBron gets closer to the end of his prime, it’s of vital importance for the team to preserve what’s left of it. That means alleviating some of his responsibilities as the team’s main ball-handler and initiator.
To do that, the Lakers must acquire a solid point guard this summer. There’s been a lot of talk of the team being interested in Kyrie Irving or Kemba Walker and the feeling possibly being somewhat mutual, but those guys would likely require a max contract, which would leave little or no cap space to fill out the rest of the team.
