Lakers win first game of season at Staples Center, beating Detroit, 97-85

LOS ANGELES – Through the losses, the Lakers insisted they were getting better. Their youth revealed itself late in games with poor decisions and worse defense.

But the cold hard math of their 1-8 record entering Sunday only masked the progress that Byron Scott and his players insisted the team made on its recent five-game road trip.

“We’ve just got to finish it off,” Scott said before his team hosted Detroit on Sunday.
In their quick stopover back at Staples Center, the Lakers did just that, winning for just the second time this season, 97-85 against the Pistons (5-5).
