The 2019–2020 NHL regular season begins this week and after a lengthy training camp and exhibition schedule, 31 general managers are optimistic about the upcoming campaign and how their clubs can navigate a pathway to the playoffs. That will change after clubs reach the quarter pole of the schedule around U.S. Thanksgiving and reality sets in.
By that point, teams have had an opportunity to evaluate their rosters and decide if they can improve their postseason chances by addressing areas of need or moving players with expiring contracts who they cannot re-sign for young prospects and future draft picks.
