Kings reach settlement in termination of Mike Richards' contract

The Kings and the NHL Players Assn. avoided going to arbitration in the contentious Mike Richards case, reaching a settlement on Friday.

An agreement may have been reached, but Richards' salary-cap figure will hover over the the Kings for years. He is due to stay on their cap until 2031, according to Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada.

Plus the Kings will be facing a cap recapture charge, at $1.32 million for five seasons, reported John Shannon of SportsNet. An individual familiar with the settlement confirmed the cap recapture charge to The Times.

The Kings terminated the contract of Richards for a "material breach" on June 29.
