Robbie Keane is hanging up his boots for his beloved Republic of Ireland.
The LA Galaxy captain released a statement on Wednesday announcing his intention to retire from international football following Ireland’s friendly with Oman next Wednesday at Dublin’s Avaya Stadium. The match will end a storied 18-year international career for Keane, who has made 145 appearances for his country and is Ireland’s all-time leading goal scorer with 67 career goals.
Keane led the Irish to three major tournaments during his international career and served as the team’s longtime captain. During Keane’s international career, the Republic of Ireland appeared at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the European Championships in 2012 and 2016.
