Former LA Galaxy defender Abel Xavier named head coach of Mozambique | INSIDER

Abel Xavier, one of the most colorful characters in LA Galaxy history, was appointed head coach of the African nation of Mozambique on Monday afternoon.

The 43-year-old former Portuguese international has spent the last three years coaching in the lower leagues of Portugal, before being announced as the new head coach of his birth nation. Xavier spent nearly two seasons with the LA Galaxy from May 2007 to July 2008, making 20 appearances for the club. Before joining the Galaxy, Xavier enjoyed a 17-year career in Europe that included stops at various clubs across Europe including, Everton, PSV, and Liverpool.
