As expected, Dodgers starter Zack Greinke has opted out of his contract to become arguably the top free-agent pitcher on the market.
The news, first reported by the Los Angeles Times, comes as Greinke, 32, leaves behind a guaranteed $77 million left on a six-year deal he signed before the 2013 season.
Based on last season’s 19-3 campaign, in which he led the majors with a 1.66 ERA and 0.84 WHIP, the National League Cy Young Award contender figures to command a significant raise from the $23 million he made last year.
Greinke was slated to make $24 million next season, followed by $23 million in 2017 and $24 million in 2018.
