DENVER >> The Dodgers might have been paying for their starting pitching sins Wednesday night — for all the gambles taken, bad luck absorbed and hubris for thinking they had assembled uncommon depth at the position.
Scheduled to start in Colorado Springs for Triple-A Oklahoma City this week, right-hander Brock Stewart headed south down I-25 to Denver instead. The hour drive lasted longer than the Dodgers’ competitive chances at Coors Field on Tuesday night as the Colorado Rockies pounded the Dodgers 12-2.
As the Dodgers cross their fingers over Rich Hill’s blister, Clayton Kershaw’s back, Bud Norris’ latissimus dorsi muscle and any number of body parts for the assorted other starters they have discarded along the way this season, Wednesday was the 26th time this season they had sent a pitcher to the mound who — for better or worse — probably belonged in Triple-A and not plying his trade at the major-league level that night.
