Severity of skin infection caught Dodgers' Justin Turner by surprise

The skin infection that landed Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner on the 15-day disabled list is no laughing matter.

According to the Mayo Clinic website, MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. It often begins as a painful skin boil and is spread by skin-to-skin contact.

Sometimes the bacteria remain confined to the skin. But they can also burrow deep into the body, causing potentially life-threatening infections in bones, joints, surgical wounds, the bloodstream, heart valves and lungs.

For weeks, Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner wasn’t allowed to sweat.
