The Presidential Medal of Freedom is recognized as the "Nation's highest civilian honor," the Office of the Press Secretary released in a statement.
Scully called Dodgers games with the franchise in Brooklyn and Los Angeles for 67 consecutive years, and he was honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick Award in 1982.
Scully's voice resonated with fans across the United States during some of the most memorable moments in baseball history, including perfect games by Sandy Koufax and Don Larsen, Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run, and Kirk Gibson's game-winning homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.
