The Dodgers designated right-handed pitcher Gus Varland for assignment at the Tuesday trade deadline. The Chicago White Sox picked up Varland off waivers on Friday. Then, the franchise optioned Varland to the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.
Varland, who will turn 28 in November, joined the Dodgers in 2021 after being traded by the Athletics. He was invited as a non-roster player to spring training, but never appeared in an MLB game. The Milwaukee Brewers claimed Varland off waivers in Dec. 2022.
Varland made his return to Los Angeles on May 22, 2023. He spent the majority of his time either with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers or injured.
