In 2013, Puig was brought up to the majors to infuse energy into a lineup that was struggling. His first month of action helped the team achieve an eventual 42-8 record over a 50-game span. Calls, emails, texts and sports arguments across the nation – including amongst major leaguers and coaches – tried to figure out if Puig’s “sample size” was good enough to send him to the All-Star Game. He ended the season playing in 104 games, 382 ABs, 66 runs, 122 hits, 21 doubles, 2 triples, 19 home runs, 42 RBIs and 11 SBs. Thus the birth of “sample size,” at least in my world.
