CINCINNATI – Great American Ball Park is the most hitter-friendly stadium among the 14 National League sites that lie near sea level. Don Mattingly has managed his team’s two games here as if he cannot forget that fact, removing two starters who had allowed no earned runs at low pitch counts and making 10 pitching changes to get 17 outs.
“This,” he said, “is is the ballpark you just don't want to let things get away from you in.”
Mattingly succeeded for another night, if barely, and Reds starter David Holmberg let three things get away in Wednesday’s decisive fourth inning.
