SAN DIEGO >> Sometimes it never hurts to try.
Justin Upton hit a baseball 406 feet in the eighth inning against Zack Greinke on Saturday night. A fan in the bleachers in left-center field at Petco Park, perhaps 10 feet beyond the outfield fence, reached toward the Padres bullpen to make a fine catch.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly challenged the call on the field, asking the umpires to review whether the fan had interfered with a hit that was not actually a home run.
The call was upheld in less time than it takes to read this paragraph.
