Davey Lopes couldn’t hide his disgust when he learned why former Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon will miss the All-Star Game: Gordon sprained his thumb sliding head-first into first base Saturday.
“No way,” said Lopes, the Dodgers’ first base coach. “Don’t tell me that. Trying to beat out a hit at first base? Wow. He knows better. He knows better. We talked about that.”
They talked about it enough during Gordon’s time in Los Angeles (2011-14) that Gordon was eventually comfortable sliding feet-first into each base by the time he was traded to the Miami Marlins in December.
