PITTSBURGH -- Now that Zack Greinke's scoreless innings streak has ended, Clayton Kershaw has picked up the baton in chasing history.
Kershaw goes into tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 37-inning scoreless streak. That makes him the first pitcher since Luis Tiant in 1968 (41 innings) and 1972 (40 innings) to have more than one scoreless streak of at least 37 innings.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, Kershaw and Greinke (45 2/3 scoreless innings earlier this season) are the first teammates to since Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown (39 2/3) and Ed Reulbach (44) to have scoreless streaks of at least 35 innings in the same season.
