CHICAGO >> Opening the season in Triple-A instead of Los Angeles was not what Trayce Thompson had in mind when he spent all winter trying to recover from the back injury that ended his 2016 season in July.
“It was a long road back,” Thompson said, acknowledging that he had “setbacks” during the offseason that delayed his recovery. “Not being with the team from the start (of the season) – that stung. I understood. But it stung.”
Thompson didn’t have to wait long to get the call. Franklin Gutierrez strained his left hamstring while trying to steal a base early in Monday’s game.
