LOS ANGELES -- The 59th batter to step to the plate Sunday at Dodger Stadium, Howie Kendrick, was the first all afternoon to notch an extra-base hit.
He was erased before he even reached. It was that kind of game between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, who battled to a scoreless tie heading into extra innings. Kendrick tried to stretch a one-out double into a triple when Mark Trumbo bobbled the ball in right field, but he was thrown out at third, turning a threat into another quick inning.
The innings piled up until the bottom of the 13th, when Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal, the 91st batter of the game, launched a leadoff, walk-off home run off Evan Marshall to give the Dodgers the 1-0 win.
