GLENDALE, Ariz. — For the second consecutive spring, the Dodgers are approaching Hyun-Jin Ryu with wariness and cautious optimism.
Their No. 3 starter in 2013 and 2014, Ryu has had more surgeries (one each on his shoulder and elbow) than starts (one low-velocity, poor-quality outing of 4 2/3 innings in July) in the two years since. Of the 10 starting pitchers in camp with the Dodgers this spring, Ryu is probably the one they are counting on the least.
“All of the reports have been extremely good. What that means we’ll see,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said of Ryu’s off-season rehab work.
