Dodgers Notes: Dave Roberts leaves camp after death of his father

/ STAFF WRITER

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Waymon Roberts was open-minded enough to marry a Japanese woman he met while stationed overseas with the Mariners and tough-minded enough to let their two children know their mixed-race origins didn’t define them.

“We didn’t talk race,” Waymon Roberts told reporters when his son, Dave, became the first minority manager in Dodgers franchise history. “And we didn’t talk racism either.”

Waymon Roberts died Friday at age 68. The former Marine had been battling health issues over the past year. Dave Roberts left the Dodgers’ camp in Arizona on Friday to be with his family.
