With the Boston Red Sox leading the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 in the top of the seventh, Miguel Vargas gifted Dominic Smith with a leadoff double.
The play itself was ugly and put Vargas’ outfield inexperience on display. Smith hit a ball in the left-center gap and both Vargas and center fielder Andy Pages called for the ball. In that situation, Pages has priority. Instead, the two players nearly collided and the ball popped out of Vargas’ glove.
“I didn’t hear him — it was too loud,” Vargas said. “I have to respect his priority, too, so I take the whole responsibility for that.
