LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers were leading the NL West comfortably at the non-waiver trade deadline in 2004 when then-GM Paul DePodesta did an unprecedented mid-season teardown of the first-place team.
In a six-player swap with the Miami Marlins, he swapped catcher Paul LoDuca (an All-Star that season), reliever Guillermo Mota and outfielder Juan Encarnacion for right-hander Brad Penny, first baseman Hee-Seop Choi and a minor-league pitcher. He sent three minor-leaguers to the Arizona Diamondbacks for outfielder Steve Finley.
And he sent outfielder Dave Roberts to the Boston Red Sox for a minor-league outfielder (Henri Stanley) never to be heard from again.
