The Los Angeles Dodgers announced they are adding a new member to the team’s ring of honor, the section of retired numbers in left field at Dodger Stadium. Walter F. O’Malley owned the Dodgers from 1943-79, until he passed away at the age of 75.
O’Malley remains one of the most influential owners in both Dodgers and MLB history as the leading figure in bringing MLB out west. O’Malley moved the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, giving MLB its first team on the West Coast. The New York Giants followed, allowing the intracity rivalry to stay alive in California.
