The Dodgers made a last-minute deal ahead of Friday's 1 p.m. trade deadline, sending Michael Morse and an unspecified amount of cash to the Pirates for outfielder Jose Tabata.
They acquired Morse, 33, from the Miami Marlins on Thursday in that massive trade and promptly designated him for assignment. Tabata, 26, had also been designated -- and outrighted -- by Pittsburgh earlier this month, which, importantly, means he must not occupy a spot on the 40-man roster.
The Dodgers don't have any of those available. Ahead of Friday's 7 p.m. game against the Angels at Dodger Stadium, they must open up four spots off their 25-man roster.
