Chase Utley placed on DL with left thumb sprain

The five-man bench for the Dodgers lasted all of one day. Chase Utley was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left thumb sprain on Wednesday, and pitcher Pat Venditte was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Utley is hitting .216/.302/.324 in 45 games this season, though he’s just 7-for-59 (.119) in his last 24 games, including 0 for his last 14.

Utley’s playing time has waned since Logan Forsythe and Justin Turner returned from the disabled list on May 15. Utley started 22 of the Dodgers’ first 40 games, but has started just four of the last 14 contests.
