When you tell Los Angeles Dodgers broadcasting legend Vin Scully that President Obama will be honoring him with the Medal of Freedom, you want to hear his reaction.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest got that chance when he called the 88-year-old Scully to let him know he will be receiving the highest civilian honor next week in Washington D.C.
“Oh my gosh, no,” Scully said after Earnest gave him the news. “Are you sure? I’m just an old baseball announcer.”
Earnest made a compelling argument against Scully’s endless modesty.
“You’ve had a remarkable impact on the lives of generations of sports fans in this country,” Earnest said, adding that his legacy is respected across the sports world, as well as in the White House.
