Carl Crawford was taking a lead off second base Wednesday when teammate Kiké Hernandez hit a routine ground ball to the Washington Nationals’ shortstop. Crawford briefly headed back toward second base, then stunningly took off for third and was easily thrown out — a double play.
Crawford’s decision to challenge the defense in that situation was sound, Dodgers third base coach Lorenzo Bundy said.
