Alberto Callaspo released by Dodgers

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers released veteran infielder Alberto Callaspo, a week after he was designated for assignment. He was removed from the 40-man roster on Aug. 19 to make room for new acquisition Chase Utley from the Phillies.

Callaspo, acquired from the Braves on May 27 in the Juan Uribe trade, appeared in 60 games with the Dodgers, including 26 starts at third base. The switch-hitter hit .260/.338/.301 with five doubles in 138 plate appearances, including .267/.345/.307 as a left-handed batter.

With 39 days left in the season, Callaspo is due roughly $639,344 of his $3 million salary for the remainder of the year, for which the Dodgers are responsible.
