Through a trade with the Miami Marlins, the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired infielder Hanley Ramirez. For the Dodgers, this trade could not have come at a better time. The Dodgers have fallen into second place in the National League West behind the first place San Francisco Giants by 2.5 games. The addition of Hanley Ramirez will definitely provide a much-needed boost for the team during this second half of the season.
Ramirez has certainly been through his own share of controversy with the Marlins. Many have questioned his efforts on the field as well as his attitude sometimes. Most of the criticism has been warranted because Ramirez has shown himself to fall into spells where it appears that he just does not care. Although, coming to into a new city in Los Angeles and a different team, may just be what Ramirez needs to utilize all his skills as player and become one of the top infielders again.
For the Dodgers, a move was necessary to light a fire for this team. Since the All-Star break, the Dodgers have been slipping quite a bit as the NL West standings indicate. Looking at Hanley Ramirez’s stats during this season they are below his career average. His batting average, currently at .246, will need to improve in order for him to be a difference maker for the Dodgers, but his presence alone in the lineup will give the Dodgers an extra weapon to work with.
Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly will have his work cut out for him with this team for the rest of the season. With acquiring Hanley Ramirez, it gives Mattingly another asset in the lineup and someone who will generate more energy to the Dodgers, something that has been lacking as of late. If Ramirez is able to keep his attitude in check and his on-field production at a high level, the Dodgers should be able to stay right in the running with the San Francisco Giants for the NL West crown.
