Those looking to gauge the Los Angeles Dodgers' interest in free agent aces James Shields and Max Scherzer will have to find someone other than GM Farhan Zaidi to get some rumor fodder.
“I’m going to give you the same boring and annoying answer that I give to our local media — and they already love me for it — that we don’t comment on free agents that are out there," Zaidi said to Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio recently, evading a directed question about Shields and Scherzer. "I will just say we’re not closing any doors at this point. I get asked a lot, ‘Are you guys done?’ And you’re never done. You’re constantly evaluating new options to improve the team, and we’re still in that phase. And if there’s a guy out there that we think makes us better and is available at the right price, we’ll absolutely consider it.”
The general consensus by several MLB analysts is that the Dodgers are unwilling to commit a large sum of money to a front-line starter after setting an MLB record for payroll in 2014 before being bounced in the NL Divisional Series.
However, as Zaidi illuminates, nothing is ever etched in stone in baseball - especially when it comes to these Dodgers.
