The San Diego Padres made a point to ask about veteran catcher A.J. Ellis during trade talks with the Los Angeles Dodgers which eventually led to outfielder Matt Kemp being shipped further south.
However, according to Padres beat writer Corey Brock, it's possible that Clayton Kershaw and other top names on the roster may have blocked such a deal from taking place:
The #Padres asked about A.J. Ellis' availability in the Kemp deal but couldn't get him included. Kershaw + others might have led revolt.

The 33-year-old Ellis is a stabilizing presence for both the pitching staff and the entire clubhouse on a day-in, day-out basis. It's no surprise that Kershaw and others rejected the idea of losing such a key persona both on and off of the field straightaway, potentially letting Dodgers management know exactly what their feelings would be if Ellis was shipped off.
In the end, Ellis remains a Dodger and doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
