We’re in the beginning stages of the Los Angeles Clippers' offseason preparations, and there are plenty of plots and subplots to follow during July’s free agent push. Here are three things to know about their free agency plans:
1) DeAndre Jordan is expected to re-sign
Jordan will be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason with several teams pursuing his services. However, all signs point to Jordan returning to the Clippers next year. Despite his reported rift with point guard Chris Paul, head coach and general manager Doc Rivers said Los Angeles plans to offer Jordan a max deal – which will be longer and worth more money than anyone else can offer him. Either way, they need him back to be contenders again next year.
2) Paul Pierce strongly considering signing with the Clippers
Pierce has incredibly strong ties with Clippers head coach Doc Rivers from their time together with the Celtics, and Los Angeles may give him the best chance to win a championship before he retires. He has already opted out of his contract with the Wizards and is deciding between Washington, the Clippers, or a return to the Celtics. Los Angeles is currently the favorite to land him.
3) Los Angeles to trade Jamal Crawford?
Crawford has been a vital part of the Clippers' bench since signing with the team in 2012, though he may find himself on another team next season. Austin Rivers showed he can be a quality backup point guard in the postseason last year, and with the team trading for Lance Stephenson, the backcourt is becoming crowded. LA needs help on the wing, and the Clippers have explored a Crawford-for-Wilson-Chandler swap with Denver. Expect more talks like that to arise in the coming days and weeks.
