SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Chargers struggled all season to get any kind of consistency out of the return game.
General manager Tom Telesco added receiver Travis Benjamin through free agency in part because of the speedster’s ability to create explosive plays on punt returns. However, Benjamin at times made questionable decisions and struggled to hold onto the football during the first half of the season.
Benjamin was replaced by veteran returner Dexter McCluster, who showed improvement at the position by making decisive decisions in the punt return game. But McCluster suffered a broken forearm in a freak accident at home before the Chargers faced the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago, and head coach Mike McCoy was once again searching for a return guy.
