Will Browns owner Haslam learn lessons that also eluded Alex Spanos for years?

Alex Spanos was exasperated.

The NFL game was proving a different business altogether from real estate and construction, where Spanos had gobbled up industry share and dominated the competition.

So much of what Spanos had touched with the San Diego Chargers, the football club he’d bought control of in August 1984, was turning to mud.

And, football scoreboards being visible for everyone to see and understand, there was no avoiding that the on-field operation was failing and that the top boss had to bear blame.

Meet today’s Spanos, truck-stop magnate Jimmy Haslam, who bought the Cleveland Browns in October 2012.
