Two NFL refs retire — but Hochuli wasn't the greater Chargers villain

When longtime NFL referee Ed Hochuli announced his retirement Tuesday, a painful memory wasn’t so much jogged as sprinted among former San Diego Chargers players and fans.

Though it’d been nearly 10 years since Hochuli’s infamous blown call cost the Bolts on that September afternoon in Denver, the pain still registered with Jacob Hester, a former Chargers fullback.

You’ll be stunned to learn that Twitter voted for Hester to nurse his grudge — but I say if you want to grouse about an officiating error that smacked a playoff-caliber Bolts team, then Jeff Triplette’s no-call is the better choice

Nine months before the Hochuli game, Triplette — whose retirement also was announced Tuesday — whiffed to the detriment of a better Bolts team and with more on the line.
