TE Jeff Cumberland out for the 2016 NFL season

San Diego Chargers veteran tight end Jeff Cumberland suffered an Achilles injury during last night’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals. He announced today via his Instagram that he will miss the 2016 NFL season.

Cumberland had been enjoying a mostly successful training camp and preseason. He routinely looked very good while competing against the Chargers’ own second and third team defense. He was likely well on his way to locking down the #3 tight end spot behind future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates and rookie Hunter Henry, and you had to expect he was going to see somewhat regular playing time from that position.
