SD mayor asks Chargers hard stadium questions

In a letter to the Chargers delivered Friday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer posed hard questions about cost, taxpayer risk and other aspects of the team’s ballot initiative, which would raise hotel taxes to help finance a joint-use stadium and convention center.

Noting that he was responsible to tell the public how the initiative would affect city finances and the region’s economy, the mayor said his letter was sent in a spirit of “openness and collaboration.”

Yet Faulconer also acknowledged the team would have trouble providing definitive answers to some of the questions.

“I am fully cognizant of the difficulty of answering some of them at this phase in the process,” the mayor said in his letter.
