Ex-Chargers GM Beathard named finalist for Hall of Fame

Bobby Beathard, who assembled the bulk of the only San Diego Chargers team to reach a Super Bowl in the game’s 51-year history, has been named the lone “contributor” finalist eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame next year.

The veterans committee Friday chose Beathard from among candidates that included Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and former Dallas Cowboys talent man Gil Brandt.

Beathard drafted Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau, acquired quarterback Stan Humphries and hired coach Bobby Ross as part of an early 1990s build-up that culminated with the 1994 Chargers advancing to the Super Bowl and drawing a capacity crowd to San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium following an upset victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.
