Ex-Chargers coach diagnosed with Alzheimer's

Former Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, 73, has early-onset Alzeheimer’s, reported Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland.

The diagnosis came about five years ago. The brain disease affects 5 million people in the United States and is the sixth-leading cause of death in America.

Schottenheimer, who directed the Chargers to an 80-47 record (.588) from 2002-06, told ESPN he plans to attend the 30th reunion of the 1986 Cleveland Browns this weekend in Northeast Ohio.

The former coach will be accompanied by Pat Schottenheimer, his wife of 48 years.

“He’s in the best of health, [but] sometimes he just doesn’t remember everything,” Pat said, per ESPN.
