Chargers sign TE Jeff Cumberland

An "under construction" sign has hovered over the Chargers' tight ends for weeks, a position group that saw Ladarius Green depart via free agency while John Phillips and David Johnson remain unsigned as free agents.

A Monday addition won't remove the placard.

It should, however, help.

The Chargers signed tight end Jeff Cumberland to a one-year contract. He spent the past six years with the Jets, starting 44 of 65 games. He joins Sean McGrath as the top reserves in San Diego behind Antonio Gates. The April 28-30 draft is expected to provide further clarity at the position.
