On Saturday, the team signed running back Andre Williams and released safety Dexter McCoil, according to Ricky Henne of the team’s official website.
With Branden Oliver ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants with a hamstring injury, the Chargers were left with just two healthy running backs on the roster—Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler.
Williams, who was released at the end of the preseason, was signed to the team’s practice squad. He played in one game for the team last season, rushing for 87 yards. However, during the preseason, he looked slow and indecisive and when roster cuts were made, it wasn’t much of a surprise when the team turned him loose.
