Chargers keep Rivers safe in exhibition win

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The list of known Chargers not playing Saturday was long, running back Melvin Gordon, cornerback Jason Verrett and defensive end Corey Liuget among the key players being pulled Saturday for the second exhibition game.

The list then got longer.

Quarterback Philip Rivers won't take the field against the Cardinals, team play-by-play man Josh Lewin first reported. Rivers played six exhibition snaps Aug. 13

against the Cowboys, completing both his passes on a touchdown drive. He'll shelved until the Aug. 28 Week 1 dress rehearsal against the Seahawks at Qualcomm Stadium.

Kellen Clemens will start at University of Phoenix Stadium.
