Watkins seemed like a good bet to make the team’s initial 53-man roster but he was cut prior to the deadline on Saturday for team’s to reduce their rosters to the league minimum. However, a spot opened up when Derwin James went on injured reserve.
The Chargers were forced to keep James on the 53-man roster for 24 hours before being able to place on IR. Once that move was made, Watkins was brought back.

Watkins joins a safety group that includes Adrian Phillips, second-round pick Nasir Adderley, Rayshawn Jenkins and undrafted free agent Roderic Teamer.
