With price of defense on the rise, Jason Heyward would be costly for Angels

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jason Heyward is the high-priced personification of a trend in baseball.

Heyward, who is one of the many outfielders the Angels have on their wish list, is expected to command the biggest contract of any player on the market this winter.

Heyward’s numbers – except for one big one, his age – are not the kind that would have attracted such a huge contract even five or 10 years ago.

Last season he hit .293 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs.

Even the more nuanced measurements hardly paint Heyward as a marquee offensive player.
