Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games played was one of those marks that nobody expected would be broken.
Then Cal Ripken Jr. started to pile up season after season in which he always was in the lineup for the Baltimore Orioles.
Ripken broke the Iron Horse's record Sept. 6, 1995 at Camden Yards when the Orioles had a 3-1 lead in the middle of the fourth inning against the Angels. That made the game official, and Ripken had the record at 2,131.
Ending an inning was a rather basic way to reach such an impressive record, and Ripken seemed satisfied with a quick acknowledgement, greeting his family and getting back to the game.
